Circumaural, Superaural, or Intraaural Wireless Headphones – Which Should You Choose?

Many people want the best listening experience, but don’t really know the difference between circumaural vs superaural vs intraaural wireless headphones, or how they work. When it comes to purchasing a product you are going to be listening to music, movies and other home audio equipment with, you need to know about the options. Here are some brief explanations to help you with the decision.

Circumaural wireless headphones – Sometimes called full size headphones, these are made in a circular fashion that surround the ear completely. If you prefer sound without outside interruptions, this type is a good choice. Cheaper models may not isolate noise quite as well as pricier models. Also, they tend to be the most comfortable because of the extra padding around the earpieces. However, prolonged wearing of these types of headphones can get warm since the padding absorbs your body’s temperature.

Superaural wireless headphones – This type of wireless headphone sits or lays on the ear, but does not enclose it like the circumaural does. It also doesn’t go in to the ear like earbuds do. Most are very comfortable and lightweight, but do allow you to hear outside noises, such as a phone ringing or knocking at the door. They tend to get more uncomfortable the longer you wear them because there isn’t as much padding, but they stay a comfortable temperature.

Intraaural wireless headphones – These are actually in-the-ear headphones, which do mount in the ear canal, similar to hearing aids. Depending upon how they are made, some plug the ear canal, eliminating all outside noise. Others leave it partially open, but even then not many outside sounds interrupt your listening.
Usually these are very pricey because of the size of the battery; it’s expensive to fit a tiny, powerful battery into such small earphones!

Choosing wireless headphones really depends upon your personal preference. Some are larger in size, and others are more comfortable and lightweight. It also depends on whether you want to completely block out noise, or you prefer to hear some noise so that you can monitor the telephone or front door. All are good, and you can find them in nearly every price range, but choose according to your own personal needs for the most satisfaction, comfort and listening pleasure.
